1. What are your nicknames?

Hmmm...Hebisner has really caught on lately.

2. How do you style your hair?

I wash it, run a brush through it and let it dry after I wash it. Very little style is involved

3. What's new in your life right now?

My 3.5 yr old son, after years of dogged resistance, has finally decided he will allow himself to be potty trained. I guess he decided he had extracted enough anxiety out of his parents over his refusal to potty train.

4. How many colors are you wearing now?

Three

5. Are you an introvert or extrovert?

Depends. In most social situations I'm an extrovert. I occasionally decend into introversion depending on the setting.

6. What was the last book you read?

"The Scientific Revolution" by Steven Shapin. Which started off with this memorable line, " There was no scientific revolution and this is a book about it." Historians are not noted for impish senses of humor in their academic work, so this line really was memorable. In the same week I read a wonderful book called the "The Line of Beauty" by Allan Hollinghurst. It's set in Thatchers' Britain in the mid 1980's.

7. Do you nap a lot?

Unfortunately no. Although I would love to be able to.

8. If the person you secretly like is already taken, what would you do?

I'm married, so I'm legally empowered to act in public to the person I like.

9. Is there anything that has made you unhappy these days?

Too much work for school and not enough time to do it.

10. What was the last thing you ate today?

A sandwich.

11. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?

About a half hour including shower, unless I have to iron something. I move pretty quick because I have a toddler to dress and get to school.

NY Times, TPM ,and a host of liberal political blogs mostly.

Not really.

killing time until I can leave work. It's dead right now.

look for the owner. Keep it if they cannot be located.

(I normally post this kind of topic to the Mojowire, but the wire is acting up today. So you get it. enjoy..

What exactly is Lindsey Graham suggesting here?:

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) vowed Thursday to do everything in his power to overturn the Supreme Court’s decision on Guantanamo Bay detainees, saying that, “if necessary,” he would push for a constitutional amendment to modify the decision.

Is he actually saying what I think he is saying? That he wants to amend Article II, Section 9 of the constitution:

The privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it.

Because if he is, could somebody please explain to him that the Great Writ is not some liberal hippie legal plot to aid the overthrow of the Republic? This little diatribe actually shocked me. A lawyer, an AMERICAN laywer, actually wants to amend the freakin Constituion and hamstring Habeas? Look Lindsey, it's not the courts fault your law degree is a worthless scrap, particularly in light of the fact you were the author of the Military Commissions act that was so efficently defenstrated by Justice Kennedy. Please stop sniffing around my Constitution. You and your batshit insane legal playmates are the last people on earth I want writing amendments to the Constitution.

Seriously, what is next with these people? After wiping their ass with the Geneva Conventions and the Bill of Rights, now they want a piece of one of the keystones handed down from before the Revolution, meant to preserve liberty and serve as a bulwark against false imprisonment and tyranny? You don't agree with the Courts decision, fine. Feel free to pout and kick your dog. But, you and your facist justice friend, Nino "who's an originalist?" Scalia can stay the Frak away from my Constitution thanks.

And in the annals of hysterical stupidity, this really takes the cake:

This decision will come at a cost,” said Rep. Duncan Hunter of California, the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee. “The Supreme Court just moved us closer to the day when U.S. Marine rifle teams will have to have lawyers read Miranda rights to terrorists captured on the battlefield.”

What a shock this comes from Duncan Hunter. No Duncan, it does no such thing. It only moves us closer to the day when we restore the rule of law and justice to this country. I'm not surprised you cannot tell the difference.

I like this one too:

The American people are going to wake up tomorrow and be shocked to hear that a member of Al Qaeda has the same constitutional rights as an American citizen,” said Graham. “[Even] the Nazis never had that right.”

If the President and his minions had used Nuremberg as a model for constructing a legal process for the Gitmo detainees, that would have passed muster. It's not quite the same, but it at least acknowledged that the defendents have rights, and they are entitled to a fair trial, which even the Friggin Nazi's received. As bad as Al Queda is, they cannot possibly hold a candle to the Nazi's?? For Christ's Sakes, they murdered over 10 millions people in industrialized death camps. What the hell is he talking about??

And for the record, if the American people are suprised that, as Jefferson wrote in the Declaration, that rights are "inalienable", and that they are universal,"endowed by their Creator", then the American people are shockingly ignorant and should grow the fuck up and learn what those words really mean. They do not mean, in any possible way, that military and civilian leaders can arbitrarily suspend or deprive people of their libery without due process, or strip them of their basic humanity and dignity EVER. This isn't rocket science people. It's only rocket science to the semi-closeted nutjobs in the VP's office and their ideological friends like Lindsey Graham who cannot grasp these ideas.

When can I wake up from this nightmare??

And Mr. Franklin? I can only say we are deeply sorry that we allowed these people to fuckup the Republic you tried to pass on to us. We're trying to do better. Thanks.

Paul Krugman has been lamenting the lack of progress on energy alternatives on his blog, and raises some interesting questions about how we perceive technology advances. Kevin Drum picks up that ball and throws it out to his commentator in an interesting discussion about where technology and science is advancing today. I wanted to throw that question out here as well. Where is science and technology pushing the edge, and perhaps how it will manifest in years to come? Krugman focused on technology that physicially manipulates to exclude the information revolution, which I believe is problematic, I would suggest throwing that in as well. Here are some areas I think technolgoy has been pushing the edge in recent years:

1. Pharmaceuticals: We've seen a radical transformation since the 1960's in this field, which has been largely beneficial, the market issues that accompanied it not withstandinging. The imminent BioTech revolution might push this even further forward

2. Biotech: The impact of mapping the genome I suspect has not been fully realized. From what I can see, we've seen some startling advanceds in crop modification, with some difficult questions raises about their potential impact. This might be the new revolution.

3. Composite materials: Someone on Kevin's blog raised this issue. It really has impacted the traditonal manufacturing industries in such areas as aviation, cars, computers, and a host of others. lighter.

4. Enviromental: The harsh reality of global warming is going to require, at leat in part, a technology pushback. Not to sound the Marx klaxon too loudly, but this effort will reshape our society in ways hard to predict.

The Movie Blog confirms an outline of the plot for Star Trek XI. I'm not sure how I feel about it:

So I am stating this for the record in case this actually happens. In a recent Star Trek post I wrote, a commenter identifying himself as JT Kirk said he had a plot spoiler that Spock would travel back in time to change history, therefore justifying a reboot of the Star Trek universe without ignoring canon.

Well back in February of 2007, I wrote a post about confirming JJ Abrams officially to direct. At that point the script hadn’t been solidified but JJ being involved meant they were likely to go with his idea to reboot the story.
Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner we already in talks to be involved and it sounded like it wouldn’t just be a cameo, and I would love to see an aged Spock and Kirk make a desperate jump back in time to change a moment in history and have it all changed from that moment forward. They already came back to save the whales, but didnt alter history. Its time for something in Star Trek to not work out as planned. They can make a mistake, and that would clear the slate to start over, with no history, no future to adhere to, and no Tribbles.

Of course back then I predicted they would involve Shatner as well, and I had forgotten that he died in Generations making his involvement in a future storyline inappropriate. So if my prediction is right, its going to be Spock flying solo to go mess up time and give us a whole new Star Trek Universe.

Scifi wire wants it's readers to pick the top 10 scifi films of all time, selected from AFI's list of 50 films they nominated as the top 50 of all time. I'm interested to see what other people think are the top 10 and why, and what films you think should have been included in the list. Peek on over to this Scifi Wire post where they list the films, and pick your top ten, and add some of your own.

Here are mine and why:

AI - Spielbergs homage to Stanley Kubrick. I know alot of people who deride this move as Spielberg dreck, but I was fascinated by this movie and what it tries to grapple with. Beautifuly directed, well acted, and even though it's a bit too long, I found the ending to be moving and interesting.

Alien - This is as much horror as scifi, but so what? It's terrifying and suspensful, with one of the great gross out scenes ever. And H.R. Gigers monsters are true nightmares come to life. Ridley Scott nails it in this movie. I can even forget he did Legend when I watch this movie. Sigourney Weaver is terrific in this movie as well.

Blade Runner: - The Directors Cut - The story is fascinating, the acting is good, and the vision of the future it brings is still awe inspiring. I prefer this version to the narration version. I really like everything about this movie, the visuals, the amazing score, and particularly what Rutger Haur does with his character. I cannot wait to see the new version on the box set. Damn, writing this makes me want to see it again...

Children of Men - The best movie of 2006 by far in my opinion. This didn't win the Oscar why again?   This movie blew me out of my chair, incredible visuals, great screenwriting and acting, this is the total package. Scifi really at it's best. This might be my current favorite. Run out and netflix this if you haven't seen it. Be warned, it will stay with you for weeks after. It's powerful in a way so few movies truly are.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956 version) - yeah, I know the cold war paranoia metaphor is a bit obvious. I watched this recently again and it still has the power to grab you and keep you in suspense. The acting of this period bugs me sometimes, particularly in these sorts of movies, but the story is great and the pace keeps you hooked right to the end. I like the 70's version too.

Star Wars IV - Despite what Lucas has wrought with the prequels, this still has a place in my heart. I was 12 when I saw this movie and it changed my life. It's hard to communicate what it was like for scifi geeks in the 70's, but Star Wars changed everything for us, changed the industry really. ( for better or worse is a good question). revolutionary special effects, great story with the humor so lacking in the prequels and great acting from Sir Alec Guiness and harrison Ford. My sentimental favorite.

Frankenstein. - I saw this just last year and I was amazed how well it holds up. One of the great stories in literature, really well done. Holds up even today to our jaded eyes.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind. - I was really unsure about this, but I loved this movie when it came out, and despite the "hippie love the alien' groove, I think its still looks pretty good. Great acting from Dreyfuss as the manic UFO geek. Nice cameo for Francois Truffaut. I despise the extra minutes though, the original ending was better.

Matrix - like Star Wars, superior to it's offspring in every way. It's so influential and copied that I think it seems dated in some ways. Cool story, amazing visuals, and even Keanau does a good job. And you got to love Agent Elrond.

Planet of the Apes. - Anothe sentimental favorite of mine. The sequels are silly I guess, and the series is unspeakable, but the original movie is strange and well done. Charlton Heston in his dystopian movie phase, and the end scene with the Statue of Libery is one of the great endings of all time. Nice Job homo-sapiens.

honorable mention: Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind

My off list choices:

Serenity: I'm a Firefly geek, so I cannot help but plug this movie. Everything we loved about the series and it's potential. It still bugs the hell out of me to think about what might have been with this story.

Empire Strikes Back After the Godfather II, the greatest sequel ever. This is the best of the Star Wars movies in my view. Good story, all the actors do their best work, with a great ending.   Visuals are still stunning: the asteroid field, the cloud city, the sabre fight culiminating in Vaders declaration.
Akira - I'm not an anime guy by any means, but this movie was the first of this genre I saw and it blew me away.

GalaxyQuest - a great homage to Star Trek and scifi in general. Great cast, funny script and it demonstrates a love for the genre and its fans that parodies like SpaceBalls cannot quite grasp. Alan Rickman is particularly outstanding.

I was listening to the Geekson Podcast the other day discussing ComicCon, and they discussed the Blade Runner Panel they attended. The good news is for those who haven't heard, there will be a 5 DVD Collecters edition of the movie, including the theatrical release, the Directors Cut, and a new cut of the film being released in theaters in a few months. Also, an official soundtrack will be released. I'm led to understand that the Vangelis Score was not released in the usual way. I'm usually only a casual fan of this musical genre, but the score of Blade Runner is haunting and I always try to remind myself to check into finding it, which I guess would have been a waste of time until now.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new cut in theaters. This is a movie that deserves to be seen on the big screen.

Some of you may have heard that Whedon had dinner with 5 people who contribued to his favorite charity sponsored by Comic-Con. One of them is a romance novelist who posted about it on her blog here. One of the more interesting bits of new that came out of that is this:

"And it looks as if there's a solid chance that the BBC will produce a 90-minute special featuring Rupert "Ripper" Giles. I'm so there"

Nice! Tony Head is a good actor and Giles was an underutilized character on that show. I hope it comes about...

There's a bunch of other news about Whedon's activities and some stories about Buffy, Firefly, and Angel that are worth reading..Check it out.
